An early star on the baseball diamond for Valdosta State, Jerome starred in 1973 and 1974 and batted .326 during his career with VSU. He was second on the Valdosta State team with a .305 batting average his initial season, a year in which he scored 28 runs while driving in 34. Jerome counted five doubles, three triples and a home run among his hits that first year and also stole 10 bases. In his final season, he batted .347, again second-best on the team, and scored 32 runs while driving in 29. Jerome counted eight doubles, three triples and a home run among his 52 hits that year and again stole 10 bases. On his career, Jerome scored 60 runs and drove in 63 while helping VSU to a third-place showing in the 1973 NAIA World Series, as well as, a fifth-place finish in the 1974 NCAA Division II World Series.
