Gary Slayton came to Titletown in the Fall of 1975 as a transfer from Indian River Community College in Florida. In his first season at then-VSC, he finished third at the conference meet in with a 27:45 time and was 19th in the Georgia State Meet with a 27:17 time. At the NCAA National meet, he finished 44th at 25:02. In 1976, he had another outstanding season, finishing second at the Blazer Classic with a 24:51 time, while he finished tied with five other teammates at 25:22 at the South Atlantic Conference meet. Slayton finished seventh at the Georgia State meet with a 26:11 time and finished 54th at the NCAA National meet at 31:18. He earned All-State honors in 1976, while he earned all-conference honors both seasons. After graduating with a degree in Business Administration and an emphasis in Accounting, Slayton held various positions, including being one of the Senior Vice Presidents at ASICS, a $4 Billion sporting goods manufacturer. He also has given back to VSU both to the Cross Country program and the University as a whole.
