VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State Blazers (16-14, 11-6 GSC) host the Georgia College Bobcats (17-14, 10-2 PBC) on Tuesday, Mar. 24 at 4 p.m. at Billy Grant Field for a midweek contest.
The Blazers are coming off a series loss to the Montevallo Falcons this past weekend as they scored a combined three runs in the first two games before scoring 12 in the game three to salvage the series. In Saturday's game,
Orlando Pena mashed two home runs and drove in six to propel VSU to its 16
th win of the year.
The Blazers and Bobcats played two weeks ago in Milledgeville, Ga. where VSU picked up a 5-1 win.
Dewey Brock got the nod for the game and went five innings while allowing just two hits. Out of the bullpen,
Keaton Fuller recorded the six out save for his first of the year as he allowed a single hit with strikeout out one. Pena and
Hunter Stowe each hit a solo home run as five runs was all that was needed for the afternoon game. Valdosta State is looking for the sweep after Georgia College swept VSU last year in two closely contested contests.
After scoring ten runs in Tuesday's win versus Columbus State, the bats went cold on Friday as Montevallo Starter Aidel Melendez tore the Blazers apart in a 4-2 win for the Falcons with the southpaw fanning ten across 7.1 innings. In game one of the Saturday doubleheader, VSU stranded 14 runners on base as they dropped game one by a final of 2-1 with many opportunities to tie or take the lead were not capitalized on. In game two, Jan Weisberg's offense scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth as they batted around while collecting a total of 11 hits with
Drake LaRoche earning his fifth win of the season in five innings of work.
Marcos Sevillano leads the team in batting average with a .385 clip while being ranked fourth in the GSC on OBP as he is getting on base at a .495 clip with 19 drawn walks. As the leadoff hitter,
Pedro Moreno is batting .336 in 2025 and has 40 hits while scoring a team high 33 starts in 30 games. Cleanup hitter
Orlando Pena leads the league in home runs with 11 while driving in 41 in 29 starts at third base. The slugger is hitting at a .327/.395/.709 clip with a total of 19 extra base hits thus far.
DJ Banks has reached base in all 30 games so far as he leads the team in hits with 41 for a .347 batting average and is second on the team in RBI with 26. We will most likely see
Dewey Brock take the hill on Tuesday, as the righty has won his last two outings while allowing zero runs and striking out five in 10.0 innings.
Georgia College is coming off a big series win as they took two out of three versus Flagler in Saint Augustine, Fla. against former VSU head coach Greg Guilliams. Despite struggling in non-conference play, the Bobcats are 10-2 in the Peach Belt Conference as first baseman Braeden Smith is batting .419 in 12 conference games with three home runs and 16 RBI. In the 19 non-conference games, Smith has slugged four home runs and driven in 20 while starting in 19 games. Overall, junior Ben Hamacher leads the team in hits with 44 while he has tallied seven doubles and has driven in 24 batters while starting in all 31 games in 2025. The Bobcats are batting .300 as a team and hold a 4.92 ERA and are .968 in the field for head coach Nolan Belcher, who is 129-98 in his fifth season at the helm of GCSU.
Following Tuesday's matchup, the Blazers will host Mississippi College (21-9, 13-5 GSC) for a crucial conference weekend starting with a single game on Friday, Mar. 28 at 5 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 1 p.m.
