VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State football team culminated the spring season with the annual Spring Game Thursday evening at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The "Red" Team battled back for a 26-24 win as
John Miller kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired for the win.
The "Black" Team, made up of the starters, fought back for much of the contest, as the Red Team started the game with a 14-0 lead. Running back
Seth McGill scored on a 27-yard scamper on a 3
rd and 17 for the 24-23 lead for the Black Team with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Later in the quarter, the Red Team forced a punt with five minutes left.
Quarterback
Ivory Durham was outstanding with his feet and arm as he found
Ted Ingram open for a long pass putting the Red Team in scoring position. Miller missed a 39-yard field goal, but the Red Team got the ball back with 2:02 remaining for the final drive.
Durham used his feet, once again, for a big gain and he then hit
Tanner Jackson for a great leaping catch out of bounds to the 28 with 21.5 seconds left following a pass interference penalty on the Black Team and an intentional grounding call on Durham set the Red Team back to almost the 50. Durham rushed 11 yards to the 17 with 8.5 seconds left and the Red Team took one shot to the end zone to no avail. Miller came in and connected for his third field goal of the game for the winner.
The Black team got on the board with a field goal from Miller as the kickers and punters played for both teams for a 14-3 score. Harlon Hill finalist
Rogan Wells tossed a touchdown pass to Travon Roberts, after a great catch and run from
Lio'undre Gallimore who was all over the field all night for a 14-10 score with 12:37 left in the second quarter.
Durham had another big run for the Red Team, setting up Miller's second field goal for a 17-10 lead. Defensively,
Jay Hawthorne made a great interception at the Red Team eight-yard line. The Red Team led 17-10 at intermission.
Freshman quarterback
Josh Jenkins hit Gallimore for a 30-yard touchdown strike for a 17-17 score early in the third quarter as the Black Team battled all the way back to tie the game.
Another great defensive play came as
Aaron Dawson stripped
Tanjuatco Gelin at the goal line for a touchback as the Red Team was about to break the tie. Following a punt by the Black Team, Durham and
Isaiah Flowers combined for some big runs as Flowers hit pay dirt putting the Red Team up 23-17 late in the third quarter prior to the last quarter heroics.
