Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Rollins on Monday afternoon. VSU fell to 2-3 on the year, while Rollins improved to 3-2.
Rollins clinched the doubles point to begin the match with a 6-0 win from Marie Debruyn and Polina Vlasova at No. 3, over freshman
Julia Saving and sophomore
Birte Langestein. The Tars won at No. 2 to clinch the point as Kaitlynn Groves and Georgina Groth won 6-1 over freshman
Rachelle Starreveld and
Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir. At the top spot, senior Estee WIddershoven and sophomore
Eva Rivoal fought valiantly, losing 6-4.
In singles, Rollins went ahead 2-0 with a win from Vlasova at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0, over
Rachel Chan-Yaneff. The Tars went up 3-0 as Groves downed Saving 6-1, 6-2. The match was clinched at No. 5 with Debruyn taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bjork Brynjarsdottir. Rivoal dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Groth at No. 4, while Widdershoven battled back for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-4 win at No. 1 for the lone VSU win. Langestein won the first set 7-5 at No. 2, but dropped the second, 6-3, and lost in the third, 11-9. Both the Widdershoven and Langestein matches were played to ten points in the third set as the match already had been clinched.
VSU returns home to host Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m. Friday at the VSU Tennis Complex, beginning a streak of four home matches in five days, culminating with Auburn Montgomery at 3 p.m. on Mar. 3.
