Vial and Jackson Named Steel’s Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State senior women's tennis player Carmelle Vial and baseball graduate pitcher Trey Jackson were named Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week.  
 
Vial, a native of Sommelonne, France, went 2-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles this week as she helped VSU to a 1-1 record in a 4-3 loss to No. 17 Lynn and a 4-0 win over Tampa.  Vial and teammate Kitti Nemeth won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles against Lynn and then Vial gave VSU a 3-2 lead in the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hailey Lizano.  Against Tampa, Vial and Nemeth won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, while Vial won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles giving VSU a 2-0 lead in the match.  
 
With the win on Saturday, VSU assured itself of its first winning season since 2017 as the team is 10-8 on the year and went 5-3 in Gulf South Conference play.  The Blazers earned the No. 4-seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Championship, beginning Thursday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.  VSU will open with No. 5-seed Lee at 6 p.m. Thursday evening.  Vial is 10-10 this year in singles and 11-6 in doubles.  
 
Jackson, a native of Melbourne, Fla., started on the bump in the final game of a three-game set against Christian Brothers, going six strong innings.  He fanned a season-high nine batters and allowed just one run and one hit, while walking one.  He held CBU to a .056 average as the Blazers won 4-1 to win the series.  He retired the first 14 Bucs in the game before a hit batsmen broke up the perfect game and he didn't allow a hit or run until the sixth inning.  
 
This season, Jackson has made 11 appearances with eight starts and logged 30.2 innings, while allowing 42 hits, 35 runs – 33 earned, walked 19 and fanned 27.  He is 2-3 on the year.  
 
He and the Blazers head to Embry-Riddle for a midweek game Tuesday evening, before closing out the regular season Apr. 24-25 at West Florida in Pensacola, Fla.
