No. 20 Valdosta State Women’s Tennis Downs No. 33 Lee in GSC Quarterfinal, 4-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 20 Valdosta State women's tennis team posted a 4-0 victory over No. 33 Lee University Thursday evening in the 4/5 matchup of the 2026 Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

The Blazers (11-8) will move on to face top-seeded Mississippi College Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the semifinals.  The Blazers improved to 47-30 all-time in the GSC Championship and are looking for their first finals berth since 2017 and fifth title overall.  Mississippi College enters following a 4-0 win over Montevallo. The Choctaws are ranked seventh nationally and are 22-0 this season.  MC won 7-0 against VSU in Pensacola, Fla., on Apr. 3.

As for Thursday evening, the Blazers set the tone, once again, in doubles as senior Carmelle Vial and junior Kitti Nemeth won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.  Lee would even the doubles as Rima Yoshida and Andrea Pascual won 6-4 at the top spot over senior Lena Beckx and junior Milica Prokic, but the Blazers came through at No. 2 doubles as junior Charleigh Fay and sophomore Ivana Castillo Hurtado won 7-6 (7-5) in a thrilling tiebreaker for the early lead.

Carrying the momentum to singles, Fay dropped just one game at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vitoria Maximiliano for a 2-0 lead.  Nemeth then added a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win at No. 6 over Nicolette Fuhr for a 3-0 advantage.  The remaining four matches all went to three sets as VSU won the first set in all four and Lee took the second set.

In the third set at No. 2, Beckx upset No. 68 Pascual 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to clinch the match.  At No. 1 singles, Prokic battled back from a 5-6 deficit in the third to force the tiebreaker and was up 5-0 in the tiebreaker over No. 16 Yoshida when the match was clinched.  Vial and Maria Duarte were tied 5-5 and No. 45 Castillo Hurtado had a 2-1 lead over Aliyah Dwyer.
