Box Score Box Score

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped its 2019 home-opener Saturday morning to No. 8 Nova Southeastern, 7-0, at the VSU Tennis Complex.  The Blazers fell to 0-2 on the year, while Nova Southeastern improved to 2-0.  Click on the link above for complete results of the match.

Despite the loss, the Blazers played tough in each match as VSU top duo of junior Estee Widdershoven and freshman Eva Rivoal battled back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the set at 5-5, before losing in a tiebreaker, 7-5 to No. 12-ranked Ana Navas and Daniela Obando.  The Sharks won the other two doubles matches to claim the team point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 and a 6-1 decision at No. 3.

After a disappointing performance on Wednesday at No. 25 Georgia College, the Blazers came out with a renewed vigor on Saturday in front of the home crowd.  VSU was in each match in singles, but were unable to come away with a victory.  However, senior Daniella Barta pushed No. 13 Natalie Espinal to a second set tiebreak, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3, freshman Birte Langestein dropped the first set to Obando, but came back for a 6-3 win in the second set, despite the match already being decided.

VSU returns to action on Sunday as it travels to No. 3 Columbus State for a 2 p.m. match.  Check back with vstateblazers.com for a complete recap of the match.
