Blazers Return Home for Key GSC Matchups Versus Mississippi College and Delta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Riding a four-game winning streak, the Valdosta State men's basketball team returns home to host Mississippi College and Delta State this week at The Complex.  VSU and Mississippi College clash at 8 p.m. Thursday, while VSU hosts Delta State Saturday at 4 p.m. for Hall of Fame Weekend.

Saturday morning, VSU will honor its 23rdedition of the Athletic Hall of Fame with a brunch set for 10 a.m., Feb. 16, 2019, at the Student Union Ballroom located at 1500 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta, GA, 31698.  Fans can purchase tickets for the luncheon at the link at the top of this page as tickets are $25 per person. 
 
VSU enters with an 18-5 record and a 11-4 mark in the GSC.  The Blazers are tied for second in the league standings with Christian Brothers as West Alabama leads the standings with a 13-3 mark.  With the wins this past weekend, VSU cliched a berth in the upcoming GSC Championship in March.  
 
Mississippi College is 5-15 overall and 2-13 in conference play, while Delta State is 15-8 overall and 11-5 in league play and sits a half game behind VSU and CBU in the league heading into the week.  DSU also has clinched a spot in the conference tournament. 
 
VSU is coming off a big week where it won two key road conference games, improving to 7-3 on the road this season.  The Blazers trailed by as many as 11 in the first half at West Georgia, using a great second half for a 91-80 victory and followed with a 110-75 thumping of Shorter. In the game against Shorter, VSU junior Bryce Smith came off the bench for a career-high 31 points on 13 of 15 from the field, while seniors Beau Justice and Winston Morgan had 20 points each. 
 
For the week, VSU shot .486 from the field on 70 of 144, while going 30 of 63 from beyond the arc (.476) and was an outstanding 31 of 34 from the line (.912).  VSU averaged 40 rebounds per game, while averaging 100.5 points per game as the 110-75 win marked the fifth time VSU has eclipsed the 100-point mark this season.
 
Individually, Smith led the way going 18 of 30 from the field (.600), 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and 5 of 6 from the line.  He averaged 6.0 rebounds and 22.0 points per game for the week.  Morgan was second on the team in scoring at 21.5 points.  He was 14 of 20 from the field, while going 11 of 15 from beyond the arc (.77) and 4 of 4 from the line.  Justice averaged 21.0 points per game with 15 made field goals, five triples and 7 of 7 from the line.  Junior Clay Guillozet averaged 14.5 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds. 
 
In the earlier meetings with Mississippi College and Delta State, VSU dominated the Choctaws, 95-77. Guillozet dropped 29 points in the game leading four Blazers in double figures on 10 of 13 from the field with three triples and six free throws.  Smith added 22 points, while Justice chipped in 19.  VSU shot 57.4 percent from the field and a blistering 70.4 percent in the second half from the field.  Against Delta State, VSU shot 50 percent, but was outrebounded 48-23 and 22-4 on the offensive end and almost pulled off the win, losing 88-83.  VSU was within three with 17 seconds left, after trailing by as many as 13 with eight minutes left.  Justice paced the team with 28 points, while all five starters for the Statesmen were in double figures, including three double-doubles, including 24 points and 17 rebounds from Justin Slocum.  Delta State played just seven players in the game.
 
Mississippi College enters this week averaging 71.7 points per game, while shooting .449 from the field, .332 from beyond the arc and .715 from the line.  The Choctaws average 29.3 rebounds per game and are 1-6 away from home this season, including 1-5 in league play.  
 
Brandon Boston leads the team in scoring at 14.9 points per game.  He is 126 of 269 from the field (.468), while going 41 of 53 from the line (.774) for third on the team in free throws made.  He leads the team averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.  Tre Jenkins is fourth in scoring at 9.2 points, but leads the team from beyond the arc at 49 of 125 (.392).  Marcus Lytle, who is second in scoring at 12.6 points, per game, leads the team in free throw shooting at 64 of 80 for a .800 average. 
 
The Choctaws lead the GSC and are 15thnationally in fewest turnovers with 230 for the season. MC is 26thnationally and second in the league in turnover margin at 3.7, while ranking second in the conference in turnovers forced at 15.15 per game.  Boston ranks third in the league in defensive rebounds per game at 5.7. 
 
Delta State snapped a two-game losing skid with a 77-67 win at home over Auburn Montgomery on Saturday. The Statesmen are 5-4 this year on the road and will play at West Florida on Thursday, prior to coming to VSU. 
 
The Statesmen average 71.8 points per game and allow 66.0 per game.  DSU is shooting .477 from the field, .363 from beyond the arc and .647 from the line.  The Statesmen average 35.6 rebounds per game and allow just 31.0.  
 
Individually, Brett Warner leads the team averaging 14.3 points per game leading players in double figures.  He is 108 of 276 (.391) from the field, while draining 38 triples for second on the team and is 74 of 88 from the line (.841) to lead the team in field goal percentage. He has 73 assists for tops on the team and 28 steals for second on the squad.  Rasheide Bell is second in scoring at 12.7 points per game.  Bell is a team-best 96 of 116 from the line (.819). Matthew Wilson, who is third in scoring, leads the team from beyond the arc with 50 made triples in 117 attempts (.427), while Slocum, who is fourth in scoring at 10.4 points, leads the team averaging 7.0 rebounds per game.  
 
For the Statesmen in the national rankings, DSU is holding teams to a .418 shooting percentage from the field for second in the league and 44thnationally.  DSU is 19thin the country in scoring defense, allowing 65.9 points per game for fourth in the league.  Cedric Harper leads the league in blocked shots per game at 1.61, while Bell is second in the league in free throws made with 95.  Slocum is second in the league and 43rdnationally in offensive rebounds per game (3.04), while Cedric Harper leads the league in total blocks with 37 for 35thnationally.  
 
The Blazers are seventh nationally in scoring offense at 90.7 points per game, while ranking eighth nationally in total assists (417).  VSU is 14thnationally in scoring margin at 13.6, while ranking 10thin assist/turnover ratio (1.64) and 10thin assists per game at an 18.1 clip.  VSU is 26thnationally in field goal percentage (.491) and 47thin fewest turnovers (255) for third in the league.  The Blazers lead the GSC and are 35thnationally in free throw percentage (.764) and lead the conference in offensive rebounds per game (12.7) for 43rdnationally.  VSU is 32ndnationally in 3-point field goals per game (10.2), while ranking 33rdin 3-point field goal percentage (.390) and 31stin total 3-point field goals made (235).  
 
Justice ranks 25thnationally and second in the league in points per game at 21.5.  He is second in the league in free throw percentage at an 84.7 percent clip for 88thnationally.  Justice is 20thnationally in field goals made (175) and 21stin total points (494).  Justice ranks 10thall-time in GSC history in career 3-pointers made with 236.  
 
Morgan is 29thnationally and second in the league in 3-point field goal attempts with 173, while ranking 15thnationally in 3-point field goals made per game (3.39), 23rdin 3-point field goal percentage (.451) to lead the league and eighth in total 3-point field goals made (78) also leading the league.
