Soccer Heads to No. 4-Seed Lee for Gulf South Conference Quarterfinal Round

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Riding a five-match winning streak, the No. 5-seeded Valdosta State women's soccer team heads to No. 4-seed Lee for Gulf South Conference Quarterfinal round match Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET in Cleveland, Tenn.
 
This is will be the second meeting between the two teams in five days, as VSU won 2-0 last Thursday in Valdosta.  Lee entered Thursday's match ranked 17th nationally.  Sophomore Lauren Hicks scored two goals off assists from senior Riley Tennant.  VSU junior goalkeeper Caroline Embler had a clean sheet in the contest with eight saves, including a number of acrobatic saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.

The Blazers finished the regular season with an 11-6 mark and a 9-4 league record.  It was the sixth time VSU has won double-digit matches in the nine-year history of the program.  VSU head coach Stephen Andrew has won 10 or more matches in each of his three seasons at the helm of the Blazers as he is 32-19-3 at VSU.  
 
VSU enters the GSC Championship with an all-time record of 2-5-2 and won the 2014 championship.  The Blazers also are looking for their fourth trip in program history to the NCAA postseason as the team went from 2012-2014. 
 
Heading into the conference tournament, VSU is one of the hottest teams in the conference riding a five-match winning streak, while outscoring the competition 17-1 down the stretch.  The Blazers are coming off a 3-0 win over Shorter on Senior Day on Saturday as the team honored six players who played in their final regular season home game in a Blazer uniform.  The 2019 senior class includes; Zhanee Anderson, Haleigh Carr, McKay Culberson, Ashley Lewis, Taylor Snell and Riley Tennant.  
 
The win over Lee on Thursday marked the second victory for the Blazers in the history of the matchup.  Lee leads the all-time series 6-2 and 3-1 in Cleveland, Tenn.  This is the second time the teams have met in the conference tournament as Lee won 5-1 in the quarterfinal round in 2017.  
 
The winner of Tuesday's match advances to the semifinal round of the conference tournament, set for Fri., Nov. 15, in Pensacola, Fla., versus the winner of the No. 1/8 matchup between top-seeded Mississippi College and Delta State.  The GSC Championship match is set for Sunday, Nov. 7.  
 
VSU is led this season by Tennant who has ten goals with seven assists for 27 points.  She has 41 shots with 28 on goal and two game winners, while Lewis is second in scoring with 22 points on nine goals and four assists.  Lewis leads the team with 44 s hots and 29 on frame, while recording five game winners.  Sophomore Lauren Hicks is third in scoring with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.  She has 39 shots with 22 on goal and two game winners.  In goal, Embler is 10-5 with seven shutouts and a 0.97 goals against average.  She has logged 1391:10 minutes with 15 goals allowed and 81 saves.  
 
In all, VSU has scored 34 goals with 26 assists and 94 points.  The Blazers have 234 shots (.145) with 138 on goal (.590) and ten game winners, along with an own goal.  Conversely, the team has allowed 17 goals with ten assists for 44 points.  Teams have 197 shots (.086) and 110 on goal (.558) with six game winners.  
 
Lee enters the conference tournament with a 14-4 record overall and a 10-3 mark in league play this season.  The Flames are led by Riley Engles and Riley Henry who each have scored seven goals and five assists for 19 points.  Engels leads the team with 60 shots (.117) and 32 on net (.533), while recording three game winners.  Henry has 43 shots and 20 on frame with two winners.  Three other players each have five goals for the year as Avery Engles leads the team with four game winners and is 2 for 2 in penalty kicks.  
 
Between the posts Taylor Green has started 16 matches, surrendering ten goals with a 0.66 GAA and 38 saves.  She is 13-3 on the year with nine shutouts and three combined shutouts.  Mollie Wheeler has played in six matches with two starts, including the match against VSU last week.  She is 1-1 with three goals allowed and nine saves, while combining on three shutouts.
 
As a team, the Flames have scored 37 gals with 23 assists for 97 points, while recording 279 shots (.133) with 131 (.470) on target.  The team has 14 game winners and is 2 for 4 in penalty kicks.
