Blazer Women’s Soccer Heads to Alabama for Two Matches

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Coming off a 6-0 win on Sunday versus Auburn Montgomery, the Valdosta State women's soccer team returns to the road this week as it travels to West Alabama for a 6 p.m. ET match Friday and then heads up to Alabama Huntsville for a 2 p.m. ET start Sunday.

VSU senior Ashley Lewis tallied her second career hat trick with three goals and an assist Sunday against AUM.  She added an assist in the 2-1 loss Friday to Montevallo.  Senior Riley Tennant added two goals and an assist against AUM, while freshman Amber Saunders scored her first collegiate goal on Sunday.  
 
Sophomore Samantha Blanford and junior Caroline Embler combined on the shutout Sunday, as Blanford earned her first win of the season, while Embler took the loss against Montevallo for the week.  
 
The Blazers are 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Alabama also is 3-3 and 1-1 in league play.  Alabama Huntsville sits at 2-4-1 and 0-2 in league play as it is scheduled to host West Georgia before welcoming the Blazers Sunday afternoon.
 
UWA enters coming off a 2-0 win over Delta State on Sunday as the Tigers scored a goal in each half.  TeMia Pride scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute for her third goal of the year, while Lauren George added a late goal for the 2-0 win.  
 
The Tigers are led by Pride who has three goals and a team-high 17 shots with 11 on frame.  She has two game winners on the year.  Anele Komani has two goals and 16 shots with eight on frame this season, while Abigail Clanton leads the team with two assists this season.  As a team, the Tigers have scored eight goals with three assists for 19 points, while recording 59 shots (.136) with 30 on frame (.508) and three game winners.  
 
Between the posts, Jenni Aarniva is 2-2 in four starts with a 2.25 goals against average and 18 saves, while facing 46 shots and has recorded one shutout.  Tabitha Weldon has started two games with a 1-1 record, allowing four goals for a 2.00 GAA and stopped seven shots.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series 5-3-2, with UWA winning the last two meetings last season during the regular season and in the conference tournament.  The Blazers' last win came in a 4-3 decision on Sept. 17, 2017.  
 
The Chargers dropped a pair of road matches at Delta State (2-1) and at Mississippi College (8-1) this past week.  UAH has scored 27 goals this season with 18 assists and 72 points.  The team has 108 shots (.250) with 60 on frame (.556) and two game winners, while going 2 for 2 in penalty kicks.  Minus a 17-0 win over Oakwood, the team has scored ten goals against NCAA competition.  Brynn Colvin leads the team with eight goals and six assists for 22 points.  She has 18 shots (.444) with 14 on frame (.778) and one made penalty kick.  Melanie Brannon is second in scoring with six goals and two assists for 14 points.  She has 11 shots (.545) with nine on goal (.818) and two game winners.  
 
In goal, the Chargers are led by Adriana Wright who has started four games and logged 270 minutes.  She has allowed nine goals for a 3.00 GAA, with 23 saves and is 1-3, while facing 53 shots.  Megan Buford is 0-1-1 in three games with two starts in 245 minutes.  She has eight saves and six goals against for a 2.20 GAA. Izzy Huddleston has played in two games with one start and allowed three goals with two saves.  She is 1-0 on the year and faced five shots.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with UAH 6-3 and won the last meeting in overtime 1-0 in Valdosta on Sept. 28.  In the game, Lewis scored in the 93rd minute off an assist from now-sophomore Kyleigh Reedy for the winner.  VSU held a 19-14 lead in shots and 8-6 in shots on goal, while Embler bested Buford in goal as Embler saved all six attempts and Buford saved seven of eight attempts.  
 
This season the Blazers are led by Lewis who has five goals with two assists for 12 points.  She has 19 shots (.263) with 12 on goal (.632) and two game winners. Tennant has four scores on the year with one assist and nine points.  She has 11 shots (.364) with eight on goal (.727) and one game winner.  Three other Blazers each have one goal on the year, while seven different players each have one assist.  
 
In goal, Embler has played in five games with three starts for 385:32 minutes, allowing four goals (0.93 GAA) with 26 saves (.867) and is 2-2 on the year with two shutouts and one combined shutout.  Blanford is 1-1 in 154:28 minutes, allowing two goals with a 1.17 GAA, along with 11 saves and a .846 average.  She has combined on one shutout. 
 
Following the road trip, VSU returns home for a matchup with West Georgia on Oct. 13 and home then matches versus Mississippi College and Delta State on Oct. 18 and Oct. 20, respectively.
