VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team continues at home this week as it hosts No. 6 Mississippi College and Delta State at the VSU Soccer Complex. The Blazers battle the Choctaws of Mississippi College on Friday evening at 7 p.m., and will host Delta State Sunday at 1 p.m.

VSU is coming off a 3-2 thrilling victory on Sunday over visiting West Georgia. In the game, senior
Riley Tennant scored two goals, including the game winner in the 83
rd minute for the winner after UWG tied the game in the 81
st minute. VSU held a 16-6 lead in shots and 11-3 in shots on goal for the match, while UWG had eight saves and VSU had one save. Tennant had five shots with four on frame and the two scores.
The Blazers stand at 5-4 overall and 3-2 in Gulf South Conference play. VSU has 10 conference points and currently is eighth in the standings. Delta State sits one conference point ahead of the Blazers in a tie for sixth with Christian Brothers, while Mississippi College is 6-0 in league play to lead the conference and 8-1 overall. Montevallo and West Alabama are tied for second in the league standings each at 4-1-1 and 13 points each.
Nationally speaking, the Blazers enter ranked second in the GSC in save percentage at a .821 clip, while ranking fifth in assists per game (1.22), fifth in points per game (5.0) and fifth in scoring offense at 1.89 goals per game. Senior
Ashley Lewis and Tennant are tied for second in the GSC in game winning goals each with two, while Tennant is fourth in the league in goals per game at 0.67. She is fifth in the conference in total goals with six, while ranking fifth in the league in total points with 15. Junior goalkeeper
Caroline Embler is fourth in the GSC in save percentage at a .814 clip, while she is seventh in goals against average at 1.10. She is seventh in the conference in saves with 35.
Mississippi College enters the match Friday winners of its last eight games, since a season-opening 1-0 loss at Saint Leo. MC has not surrendered a goal at the 48:16 mark against Shorter in a 9-1 victory on Oct. 6, marking a streak of 221:44 minutes. For the season, MC has allowed just seven goals in nine matches.
The Choctaws enter as the highest ranked team in the GSC at sixth this week. MC has scored 38 goals on the year for a 4.22 goals per game average, while recording 33 assists and 109 points. Mississippi College has 219 shots on the year with 115 on goal for a .525 shots on goal percentage. The team has 15 saves on the year with 61 corner kicks and is 1 for 1 in penalty kicks.
Individually, Katie Taylor leads the team with ten goals and four assists for 24 points. She has 41 shots with 25 on goal, four game winners and 1 for 1 in penalty kicks. Erin Hederman is second in scoring with 16 points on five goals with six assists to lead the team. She has 16 points with 37 shots and 16 on frame. Hederman has two game winners on the year. The Choctaws lead the all-time series with VSU 4-0-1, including a 1-0 win last season in Clinton, Miss. The tie came in a 1-1 decision in Valdosta on Oct. 5, 2014, in the first meeting between the two teams.
Delta State is 3-3-4 on the year and 3-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play as it will play at West Georgia, before Sunday's match with the Blazers. The Statesmen won 1-0 in two overtimes on Sunday versus Union with a goal in the 104
thminute by Hannah James as it marked the first score for DSU since a 1-0 win at Shorter on Oct. 4, spanning a streak of 375:38 minutes without a score.
The Statesmen have scored six goals for the year in 118 shots with 53 shots on target, while recording 58 corner kicks and 2 for 3 in penalty kicks for the season. DSU has 42 saves on the year, while posting a 0.91 goals against average.
For DSU, Tasha Toms leads the team with two goals scored and has two game winners while going 1 for 1 in penalty kicks. Four other players each have scored one goal, while Casey LaFontaine leads the team with 14 shots and Erin Longsden has a team-high seven shots on goal. Amanda Hilliard has logged all 993:42 minutes in goal for the most by one goalkeeper in the GSC, surrendering ten goals for a 0.91 GAA, with 42 saves and is 3-3-4 on the year with four shutouts.
VSU leads the all-time series with Delta State 7-0-1 and won last season 4-0 in Cleveland, Miss. Both Lewis and Tennant each scored two goals in the win in 2018. Tennant also added an assist in the match.
Following the matches, VSU returns to the road at West Florida and Spring Hill College (Oct. 25-27) and at Christian Brothers and Union (Nov. 1-3) before returning home to host Lee and Shorter (Nov. 7-9) for the final regular season home games.
