VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team made short work of the Shorter Hawks on Tuesday with a dominant 5-0 victory in Gulf South Conference action at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
The Lady Blazers set the tone in doubles action, beginning with an 8-3 victory for
Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven over Aleksandra Durzynski and Melinda Chrun at No. 1.
Daniella Barta and
Anke Poncelet followed suit with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Anastasia Jovicic and Martina Radinovic.
Taylor Vinge and Hera Brynjarsdottir teamed up at No. 3 for an 8-0 triumph over Victoria Overby and Emily Duggan, which put VSU up 3-0 after doubles.
The momentum carried over into singles play, where Widdershoven toppled Chrun, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 before Amelia Cornwall slammed the door on the Hawks with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Duggan at No. 6.
The victory lifted VSU to 6-11 overall and evened up the Lady Blazers' conference record at 6-6. Meanwhile, the Hawks dropped to 4-11 on the year and 1-9 against league opponents.
Valdosta State will return to action in Pensacola, Fla. with a neutral showdown against Xavier University of Louisiana. The match is slated for 3:00 p.m. this Saturday.
