Lady Blazers Win Once, Lose Twice in Busy Weekend of Tennis

VSU vs. COLUMBUS STATE | VSU vs. LEE | VSU vs. BARRY

VALDOSTA, Ga. -
The Valdosta State women's tennis team sandwiched a Gulf South Conference victory in between a pair of losses after playing for three straight days at The VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga. this weekend.

The Lady Blazers faced No. 3 Columbus State on Friday and got off to a great start with a doubles win for Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven, 8-6, over Noa Davico and Beatriz Lopez at No. 1. The match soured from then on, however, as CSU reeled off eight straight victories to claim the 8-1 win.

On Saturday, Valdosta State bounced back and routed Lee with a 7-2 win. Schmidt and Widdershoven scored another victory, 8-3, at No. 1 to spark VSU, and their teammates followed suit as Anke Poncelet and Taylor Vinge picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3. Five additional wins in singles sealed the deal.

The No. 2 Barry Buccaneers proved to be too much for VSU on Sunday, and defeated the Lady Blazers 5-0 by way of the mercy rule.

Valdosta State moved to 1-6 with the weekend action, and will now look ahead to Nova Southeastern, who will be in Valdosta, Ga. for a non-conference matchup against the Nova Southeastern Sharks. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
