PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazers dropped a Gulf South Conference matchup on Thursday, as No. 2 ranked West Florida scored an 8-1 victory at Ralph Skeeter Carson Tennis Complex in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Blazers started strong, as
Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven teamed up for an impressive 8-5 victory over UWF's No. 1 doubles contingent of Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan. The match took a turn in favor of the Argonauts from that point forward, however, as GSC Player of the Week Ines Nicault joined Lais Bicca at No. 2 for an 8-5 win over
Daniella Barta and
Anke Poncelet. Diana Vlad and Samantha Echevarria followed suit at No. 3 with an 8-0 victory over
Taylor Vinge and Hera Brynjarsdottir.
In singles action, it was a clean sweep for the Argonauts. Schmidt battled at No. 1 before falling 7-6, 6-2 to Coyos, and Widdershoven fell to Nicault at No. 2, 6-1, 1-0 (def.). Barta took a set from Lujan, but fell in the third set at No. 3 with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, and Brynjarsdottir suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Vlad at No. 4. The match concluded with losses for Vinge and Amelia Cornwall, who fell to Echevarria (6-0, 6-0) and Heather Mixon (6-1, 6-0) at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
The Valdosta State Blazers fell to 2-9 overall and dropped to 2-4 in league play, while UWF improved to 18-1 overall and remained unblemished in conference action with a record of 7-0.
The Lady Blazers have an opportunity to bounce back quickly with another conference match on Friday against Mississippi College. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla.
