VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team scored their second Gulf South Conference victory of the 2018 season after rolling past the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville in a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon at The VSU Tennis Courts.
The Lady Blazers were sparked by
Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven at No. 1 doubles, who scored an 8-5 win over Stefanie Mehlich and Sarah Stearman. Cristina Cabanas and Mariana Lopez fired right back with an 8-5 victory over
Daniella Barta and Hera Brynjarsdottir at No. 2, but the Chargers were unable to send a full team out at No. 3, which allowed the Blazers to take a 2-1 advantage going into singles action.
After the break, Schmidt struck again with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mehlich at No. 1, before Widdershoven cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. After Brynjarsdottir claimed a victory over Lopez at No. 4, Amelia Cornwall landed a win by forfeit at No. 6, and the Lady Blazers secured the victory.
Valdosta State improved to 2-8 overall with the win and evened up their GSC record at 2-2. The Chargers fell to 6-6 on the season and 4-5 in league play after their loss.
