No. 6 Blazers Host Fort Valley State Monday Evening

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 6-ranked Valdosta State men's basketball team returns home to host Fort Valley State Monday at 7:30 p.m. at The Complex in a non-conference matchup.

The Blazers are 8-0 on the year and are coming off a convincing 82-62 win at Tuskegee on Saturday, where they dominated the second half with a 19-0 run to start the period. Senior Beau Justice dropped 23 of his 25 points in the second half.  VSU had all five starters in double figures as junior Darrell Jones recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. VSU shot 52 percent for the game, while going 12 of 26 from beyond the arc.  The Blazer "D" clamped down on the Golden Tigers in the second half, holding TU to just 32.4 percent after they opened at 50 percent in the first half. 
 
This season, the Blazers are led by Justice, who is averaging 22 points per game as he is 61 of 122 from the field (.500), while going 19 of 48 from beyond the arc (.396) and 35 of 41 from the line (.854).  He is averaging 4.5 rebounds per game with 32 assists to just nine turnovers and nine steals.  
 
Justice leads five Blazers in double figures as senior Winston Morgan is second in scoring at 15.4 points per game on 38 of 81 from the field (.469), while leading the team in triples made at 32 of 69 for a .464 clip.  Morgan is 15 of 19 from the line (.789), while ranking second on the team with 31 assists and nine steals.  Jones is third on the team in scoring at 13.5 points, while leading the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game.  Jones is 42 of 78 from the field for a team-best .538 clip among starters, while draining seven triples and going 17 of 25 from the line.  Junior Clay Guillozet is fourth in scoring at 12.1 points, while ranking tied for third on the team with 12 triples.  Senior Desmond DeRamus is fifth in scoring at 10.6 points per game and leads the team with 14 steals, while ranking second from the charity stripe at 23 of 32 for a .719 clip.  
 
Asa a team, the Blazers are shooting .512 from the field on 278 of 543, while going 93 of 215 from beyond the arc (.433) and 129 of 173 (.746) from the line.  VSU is averaging 38.1 rebounds per game, while allowing just 32.8.  The Blazers have 157 assists, 77 turnovers, 20 blocks and 67 steals, while averaging 97.2 points per game.
 
Conversely, teams are shooting .474 against the Blazers on 232 of 489, while going 50 of 146 from beyond the arc (.342) and are 90 of 126 from the line (.714).  The opposition has 109 assists, 128 turnovers, 22 blocks and 30 steals, while averaging 75.5 points per game.
 
Fort Valley State enters with a 2-9 record overall and a 1-1 mark in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Wildcats are coming off a 95-67 loss at Carson-Newman (Tenn.) on Saturday.  Prior to that, FVSU had won its first two games of the season with wins at home over Central State (Ohio) and Georgia Southwestern. The Wildcats began the season 0-8, including a 94-65 loss to VSU in Albany, Ga., the second game of the season.
 
For the Wildcats, they are averaging 63.3 points per game and allowing 77.0, while shooting .418 from the field on 259 of 620, while going 53 of 184 (.288) from beyond the arc and 125 of 189 from the line (.661).  FVSU is averaging 37.5 rebounds per game, while recording 126 assists, 196 turnovers, 59 steals and 35 blocks.  
 
The opposition is shooting .421 from the field on 295 of 701, while going 93 of 316 from beyond the arc (.294) and 164 of 222 from the line (.739).  The opponents are averaging 38 rebounds per game, while recording 161 assists, 125 turnovers, 86 steals and 31 blocks.  
 
Individually, Jaylon McMillian leads the team averaging 16.3 points per game on 66 of 177 from the floor (.373).  He is a team best 27 of 89 from beyond the arc (.303) and 20 of 31 from the line (.645). McMillian has 26 assists for second on the team.  K'Viontae Williams is second on the team in scoring at 13.8 points, while going a team-best 53 of 99 from the field (.535) and 13 of 30 from beyond the arc (.433). Williams is a team-best 33 of 46 from the line (.717) with 32 assists and 17 steals to lead the team.  Shawn Foxbrennen is third in scoring at 11.4 points, while leading the team in rebounding at 6.9 per game.
 
In the last meeting, VSU led by 11 in the first half and exploded with 58 points in the second half for the 94-65 victory.  Morgan and Justice each had over 20 points, while Jones added 10 points.  VSU held a 21-9 lead in points off turnovers, forcing 20 Wildcat miscues as VSU had just 11 turnovers.  Foxbrennen had 20 points for the Wildcats with nine rebounds, while McMillian added 15 points.  VSU held the Wildcats to just 2 of 15 from beyond the arc and 37.3 percent shooting for the game.
 
Following the game, the Blazers return to the road for conference games at Lee and Alabama Huntsville, Dec. 15-17, prior to the Christmas break.  VSU returns home after the Christmas holiday to host Emmanuel College Dec. 30, at 4 p.m., beginning a three-game homestand.
