MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team will take an 11 match winning streak into the Gulf South Conference Championship match on Saturday, thanks to a 5-1 win over the West Alabama Tigers in the semifinal round of the GSC Tournament on Friday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
Laura Ubeda and
Estes Widdershoven sparked VSU early with an 8-2 win over Teona Tatishvili and Andrea Tomassone at No. 3 doubles.
Anja Cosovic and
Daniella Barta teamed up to outlast Evelyn Moreno and Liliana Araucz, 8-3, at No. 2, before UWA's No. 15 ranked team of Amina Mukhametshina and Georgina Morral salvaged doubles for the Tigers at No. 2 with an 8-6 win over
Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet.
Entering singles action with a narrow 2-1 advantage, Cosovic went right back to work with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tatishvili at No. 3, before Ubeda blew by Evelyn Moreno at No. 2. Needing just one additional point, Poncelet answered the call and sealed the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The win lifted Valdosta State to a 16-5 overall record on the season and advanced the Lady Blazers to their 14th appearance in the Gulf South Conference Championship. Valdosta State will face West Florida (22-6) on Saturday, which marks the 13th matchup all-time between the two teams in the GSC finals. The Lady Blazers and the Argonauts have squared off in nine of the last 10 GSC Championship matches, with VSU scoring victories in 2005, 2008, and 2010.
