VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lady Blazers of Valdosta State's women's team racked up two wins during a successful weekend in Gulf South Conference action against the Shorter Hawks and the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
In Rome, Ga. on Friday, VSU secured an 8-1 win, before matching the effort for an 8-1 victory over the Chargers on Sunday in Huntsville, Ala. With the two victories, the No. 14 ranked Lady Blazers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 against GSC opponents.
Valdosta State kicked off the weekend with three straight wins in doubles action against the Hawks.
Bea Morales Hernandez and
Anke Poncelet defeated Aleksandra Durzynski and Martina Radinovic, 8-1, at No. 1, and
Sabrina Schmidt and
Anja Cosovic scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Melinda Chrun and Monika Gredzinski. VSU's final doubles point came when
Laura Ubeda and
Estes Widdershoven secured an 8-1 victory over Julie Rinderknech and Cassandra Wennestrom at No. 3.
Morales Hernandez, Cosovic, Ubeda, Schmidt, and Poncelet all held momentum in singles action in each of the top five positions to help cap off the 8-1 win over Shorter.
On Sunday afternoon, the Lady Blazers set the tone from the outset with three straight wins in doubles action, as Morales Hernandez teamed up with Poncelet for a win at No. 1, followed by victories for Daniela Barta and Cosovic at No. 2 and Ubeda and Widdershoven at No. 3.
The finishing touches were added by VSU in singles action, when Morales Hernandez defeated Marleen Gort, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1, before Ubeda gave the Lady Blazers a 5-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2. Schmidt added a 6-3, 6-4 win over Naomi Esteve at No. 3, and Poncelet picked up a, 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Anie Remmerswaal. Barta claimed VSU's final point at No. 5 with a win over Sarah Stearman.
Valdosta State will return to action for a neutral contest against No. 5 ranked Hawaii-Pacific on Friday, March 10, at 3:00 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.
