VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team continued their hot streak on Friday with a commanding 9-0 win over the Lady Statesmen of Delta State in Gulf South Conference action in Pensacola, Fla.
The No. 10 ranked Lady Blazers allowed Delta State just to claim just four sets in doubles play and just six sets in singles play for a completely dominant victory, which improved the team to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in GSC play. The Lady Statesmen fell to 5-13 overall and 3-6 after the loss.
Bea Morales Hernandez and
Sabrina Schmidt blew past Alex Howe and Nathalia Sato with an 8-3 win at No. 1, before Daniela Barta joined Anja Cosovic for an 8-0 shutout at No. 2.
Laura Ubeda and
Estes Widdershoven capped off the perfect doubles performance with an 8-1 win over Abigail Smith and Madison Wages at No. 3.
In singles, Sato managed to take one set against No. 13 ranked Morales-Hernandez, but that was all, as Sato fell 6-0, 6-1. Ubeda had no problem with Howe, who was forced to retire due to injury at No. 2 with an early 3-0 deficit, and Schmidt trounced Alvarez-Rubio at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
In the final three singles matchups, DSU's Smith was the only competitor to win a set, but that was all
Estes Widdershoven would allow. Barta,
Joanna Lario, and Widdershoven all ran away with wins, outscoring the Lady Statesmen 6-0 in all but Widdershoven's first, which resulted in a 6-1 win for the Lady Blazers.
