PENSACOLA, Fla. - The No. 10 ranked Valdosta State women's tennis team won their fourth straight match with a 5-2 win over No. 22 West Alabama on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.
Due to the fear of poor incoming weather, the two teams elected to start the match with singles play, and No. 26 ranked Amina Mukhametshina put the Lady Blazers behind early after taking down No. 13
Bea Morales Hernandez with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1.
Valdosta State bounced back quickly, however, and a 6-0, 6-2 win for
Anja Cosovic over Georgina Morral at No. 2 knotted the match back up at 1-1.
Laura Ubeda followed at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Evelyn Moreno, and
Sabrina Schmidt joined Daniela Barta for wins at No. 4 and No. 5 over Teona Tatishvilli and Liliana Araucz, respectively.
West Alabama forced the match into doubles play after Andrea Tomassone picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Joanna Lario at No. 6 singles, but Barta and Cosovic sealed the win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Araucz and Moreno.
The win pushed the Blazers up to a 9-5 overall record on the season and a 4-1 stint in conference play, while the Tigers dropped to 10-6 overall and fell to 5-2 against Gulf South Conference opponents.
Valdosta State will return to Pensacola, Fla. on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. showdown against UC San Diego.
