FULL RESULTS
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team made a strong showing against the No. 5 ranked Hawai'i Pacific Sharks, but in the end, HPU escaped with a 5-4 victory in non-conference action on Friday in Savannah, Ga.
Valdosta State got off to a strong start after Daniela Barta and
Anja Cosovic secured an 8-6 win over Nicole Hoynaski and Oceane Adam to begin the match at No. 2.
Laura Ubeda and
Estes Widdershoven followed suit with an 8-4 win at No. 3 in doubles play, before the Sharks salvaged doubles action with a narrow 9-7 win at No. 1.
Hawai'i Pacific overcame the 2-1 deficit in singles action with four singles victories, beginning at No. 1, where Hoynaski outlasted Morales Hernandez, 7-5, 6-4 in a well contested showdown. Lara Meccico picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Adam gave the Sharks another point with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Ubeda at No. 3.
Schmidt kept the Blazers in play with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Kijasova at No. 4, and Barta made it tight with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Schulhof at No. 6. Leticia dos Santos gave HPU the win they needed at No. 5, however, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Poncelet.
Valdosta State fell to 5-3 overall following the loss, while the Sharks improved to 5-2.
The Lady Blazers return to action on Saturday for a 9:00 a.m. matchup against No. 6 Barry in Savannah, Ga.
