VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped their Gulf South Conference opener, 7-2, to No. 7 West Florida on Sunday afternoon at The VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
With the loss, No. 14 ranked Valdosta State fell to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Argonauts remained unbeaten for a 4-0 overall record and a 1-0 start to their GSC schedule.
Paula Lopez teamed up with Paula Coyos at No. 1 doubles to outlast
Bea Morales Hernandez and
Anke Poncelet, 8-6, while Anja Cosivic and Daniela Barta fell to Jordana Lujan and Diana Vlad, 8-6 at No. 2. Finally, Valeria Mantilla joined Heather Mixon for a narrow 9-7 win over
Laura Ubeda and
Estes Widdershoven at No. 3.
Valdosta State's two additional points came at No. 1 and No. 3 in singles play, where Morales Hernandez took down Lopez, 6-4, 6-3 on court one, before Ubeda defeated Lujan 7-5, 6-4 on court three.
All of the remaining singles matchups went in favor of UWF. Coyos defeated Cosovic, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, Vlad took down
Sabrina Schmidt, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4, Poncelet fell, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, to Mixon at No. 5, and Mantilla edged out Barta, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6.
The Lady Blazers next match is slated for March 3rd against the Shorter Hawks in Rome, Ga.
