VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of the No. 9 ranked West Florida Argonauts in the team's Gulf South Conference opener on Sunday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga. at The VSU Tennis Courts.
The Blazers fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in GSC action after the loss, while the Argonauts improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Jordi Mas and
Fernando Rivas teamed up to take a point for the Blazers in doubles action with an 8-4 win over Serdar Bojadjieva and Pedro Roese at No. 3. The Argonauts escaped doubles play with a 2-1 lead, however, thanks to wins for Alex Peyrot and Pedro Dumont over
Axel Holm and
Eden Peleg at No. 1 (8-6), and Warren Kuhn and Gabriel Diaz over
Leo Blay and
Xavier Pineda at No. 2 (8-2).
In singles play, Valdosta State's only win came at No. 2, as Pineda landed a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Diaz. Remaining scores all favored UWF, as Peyrot took down Blay (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) at No. 1, Kuhn defeated Rivas (6-4, 6-1) at No. 3, Bojadjieva toppled Mas (7-5, 6-3) at No. 4, Dumont took Holm (6-2, 6-1) at No. 5, and Alfonso Castellano outlasted
Davis Stewart (6-0, 6-2) at No. 6.
Next up for VSU, it's a 2:00 p.m. GSC showdown against the Shorter Hawks on March 3rd in Rome, Ga.
