VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's tennis team gave a strong effort on Friday afternoon in the final match of the regular season, but came up short in a 4-2 loss to No. 23 Lynn. The Blazers ended the regular season with a 5-11 record overall, while Lynn improved to 11-8.
Prior to the match, the Blazers honored two outstanding seniors playing in their final regular season home match in
Jerome Iaconi and
Wilson Igbinovia. VSU Athletics wishes each of these seniors the best in their future endeavors.
For doubles, the short-handed Blazers almost came up with the team point as Lynn won by forfeit at No. 3, but Blazer duo of
Jerome Iaconi and
Pietro Casciola won 6-4 over Victor Alves and Aymen Alimoussa. Blazer duo of
Emile Delporte and
Wilson Igbinovia gave No. 10 tandem Louay Makke and Davide Contimiglia all they could handle, falling 6-4. The Blazers battled back for a 4-4 score, but the Fighting Knights came up with two wins for the 6-4 margin.
VSU has won the doubles point just one time this season in a 6-1 win at Georgia College on Mar. 13.
Lynn took a 2-0 lead with a forfeit at No. 6 singles and used a straight-set win from Aymen Alimoussa at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Delporte.
Pietro Casciola won 7-5, 6-4 over Santino Morel for a 3-1 score and then Igbinovia won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles for a 3-2 score. Iaconi battled back from a 3-6 opening set loss at No. 1 to No. 25-ranked Louay Makke and held a 6-5 lead in the second set, but Makke rallied for a 7-6 (7-2) win to clinch the match.
At No. 5,
Yohann Meunier won the first set, 7-6 (7-4) and led a 4-1 lead in the second set when the match was clinched.
VSU now sets its sights on the 2026 Gulf South Conference Championship, scheduled for Apr. 23-25 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Blazers are the No. 6-seed and will open with No. 3-seed West Alabama on Apr. 23 at 9 a.m. ET.
