FINAL RESULTS
VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's tennis team used a strong 3-0 start in doubles play to land a 5-4 victory over the visiting Eagles of Embry Riddle on Friday at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
The Lady Blazers improved to 3-1 on the season following the victory, while the Eagles dropped to 1-3.
Bea Morales Hernandez and
Anke Poncelet toppled Maud Mrad and Georgina Wood, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, before Anja Coksa and Daniela Barta added on with a 9-7 win over Maria Turrillo and Alexis Marshall at No. 2. In addition,
Laura Ubeda teamed up with
Estes Widdershoven at No. 3 to finish off Kathryn Bock and Ana Gonzalez Hoy, 8-3.
The impressive start proved to be critical for Valdosta State, as the Lady Blazers were able to take just two of their singles matches.
Sabrina Schmidt took down Wood, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, and Widdershoven gave VSU the win they needed with an 8-3 win over Gonzalez Hoy, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.
In other singles action, Mrad defeated Morales Hernandez, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1, Turrillo knocked off Poncelet, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, Marshall defeated Barta, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4,at No. 4, and Bock rolled past
Joanna Lario, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.
Valdosta State looks to continue their momentum on Saturday, with a 1:00 p.m. matchup against the visiting Mocs of Florida Southern at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
