MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazer tennis team fell 5-1 in the Gulf South Conference Championship match at the hands of the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
Valdosta State picked up a point in doubles play, after
Josephine Jedrychowski and
Daniella Barta toppled Valeria Mantilla and Sarai Flores, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles, but West Florida overtook the Lady Blazers the rest of the way.
Laura Ubeda and
Sabrina Schmidt fell 8-6 at No. 2 to Katerina Dikosavljevic and Diana Vlad, and Paula Lopes and Nina Bubelova teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Bea Morales and
Anke Poncelet, 8-5, in a tightly contested match.
For the Argonauts, Bubelova, Flores, and Heather Mixon claimed the remaining three wins in singles action to help UWF capture their 16th all-time GSC Tournament Title.
The Lady Blazers fell to 13-8 following the loss, while the Argonauts clinched an NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Tournament berth and improved to 22-5.
Valdosta State will now await the announcement of the national tournament field on May 3rd to learn their fate for the remainder of the 2016 season.
