COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 15 Valdosta State women's team put up a valiant effort against the No. 8 Cougars of Columbus State, but ultimately fell short in a 5-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon in Columbus, Ga.
The non-conference showdown began in favor of the Lady Cougars, as VSU's
Bea Morales Hernandez and Josephine Jedrochowski dropped and 8-2 loss to Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech at No. 1 doubles. Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale teamed up at No. 2 to put CSU in front 2-0 after an 8-5 win over
Laura Ubeda and
Sabrina Schmidt, but
Anke Poncelet and
Daniella Barta kept the day close at No. 3 with an 8-6 win over Olivera Tadijiin and Rachael Williams.
Jedrochowski scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Utech at No. 3, and Schmidt defeated Tadijiin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, but the Lady Blazers dropped matches at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6, which led to the win for Columbus State.
The Lady Blazers fell to 5-4 overall on the season, while the Lady Cougars improved to 10-3.
Valdosta State returns to conference action in two weeks, with a March 23
rd matchup against Alabama-Huntsville in Valdosta, Ga. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
