PENSACOLA, Fla. - In Gulf South Conference women's tennis action on Friday, the No. 6 ranked West Florida Argonauts picked up a 9-0 win over the Valdosta State Lady Blazers at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
The Argonauts broke out in front 3-0 after the opening rounds of doubles action, after Hannah Toro and Valeria Mantilla defeated
Taylor Vinge and
Josephine Jedrychowski 8-3. Paula Lopez and Nina Bubelova followed at No. 2 with an 8-3 win over
Laura Ubeda and
Sabrina Schmidt, and Kat Dikosavljevic and Dianna Vlad scored an 8-6 win over
Anke Poncelet and
Daniella Barta at No. 3.
UWF held momentum in singles action, while also benefitting from some misfortune on VSU's part, as
Bea Morales Hernandez was forced to retire her match at No. 1 after suffering an injury.
Lopez overtook Ubeda, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, before Bubelova toppled Schmidt, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3. Sarai Flores and Vlad closed out the match with 7-6, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-2 wins over Poncelet and Barta, respectively.
The Lady Blazers fell to 5-6 overall with the loss and saw their conference record even up at 2-2. The Argonauts improved to 13-2 overall and remained perfect in conference play, improving to 6-0.
VSU will have an opportunity to rebound tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in another Pensacola, Fla. match against Concordia.
