VALDOSTA, Ga. – A slow start in doubles action for the Valdosta State women's tennis team led to a Gulf South Conference upset in Valdosta, Ga., as the Lady Blazers were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell 4-5 to the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers at the VSU Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
Valdosta State nearly salvaged the match with a strong showing in singles play, beginning with a convincing 6-2, 7-6 win for
Laura Ubeda at No. 1 over Marleen Gort.
Josephine Jedrychowski fell 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2 to Cristina Cabanas, but VSU recorded another point at No. 3, thanks to
Sabrina Schmidt's 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Aniek Remmerswaal.
Anke Poncelet followed at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sarah Stearman, and
Daniella Barta posted a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Naomi Esteve before
Joanna Lario fell 6-3, 7-5 to Marta Briega at No. 6.
The four wins in singles weren't enough to overcome the Chargers' doubles effort, in which Madison Gulick teamed up with Cristina Cabanas for a narrow 9-7 win at No. 1 over Ubeda and Schmidt. Gort and Esteve followed suit and defeated Poncelet and Barta 8-2 at No. 2, before Remmerswaal and Stearman closed out doubles play with an 8-2 victory over Jedrychowski and Lario at No. 3.
The loss dropped the Lady Blazers to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in GSC play, while the Chargers boosted their overall record to an even 8-8. UAH is now 6-1 against conference opponents.
