VALDOSTA, Ga. - The No. 21 Valdosta State women's tennis team opened up the 2016 season on a high note with a convincing 7-2 win over the Lady Bobcats of Georgia College on Friday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
Bea Morales and
Josephine Jedrychowski teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Camille Clausse-Pujo and Kristen Jones, 8-3 early in the day, and
Laura Ubeda and
Sabrina Schmidt defeated Macy Polk and Jena Kelly, 8-6 to keep momentum going for Valdosta State. The Lady Blazers capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory for
Daniella Barta and
Anke Poncelet over Katie Krupp and Emma Niemi at No. 3.
Working with a 3-0 advantage, Morales dominated Clausse-Pujo at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-5, before Ubeda toppled Jones with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Jedrychowski took care of Macy Polk at No. 3 with a 6-1, 4-6, (10-5) win, before Schmidt smoked Kelly at No. 4, 6-0, 6-4.
In the final two positions of singles action, Niemi outlasted Poncelet with a narrow 7-6, 7-6 win, and
Joanna Lario fell to Cristalei Polk 6-3, 7-5.
With the win, VSU opened up their season at 1-0, while the Lady Bobcats fell to 1-1 on the year.
Valdosta State returns to action at home on Sunday with another nationally ranked opponent, as the Lady Blazers will host No. 3 Saint Leo at noon.
