SAVANNAH, Ga. - The top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic Pirates downed No. 23 Valdosta State 9-0 on Friday afternoon in NCAA Division II women's tennis action at Bacon Park in Savannah, Ga.
The Lady Blazers fell to 9-12 on the year, and the Pirates used the win to add on to their home winning streak of 153 straight and improve their overall record to a perfect 24-0.
The Blazers, who were forced to take losses at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to a shorthanded roster, fell behind 0-3 at the conclusion of doubles play.
VSU's duo of
Anke Poncelet and
Jennifer Rink dropped an 8-4 loss to Lena Lutzeier and Clara Perez in the top position, while
Joanna Lario and
Bea Morales Hernandez fell at No. 2 8-1.
In singles play, No. 39 Alejandra Cisneros defeated Morales Hernandez in the top spot, and No. 10 Letzeier held Rink at bay at No. 2 to pick up a 6-3, 6-4 win.
No. 3 singles saw No. 7 Perez handle Lario 6-0, 6-0, before Poncelet fell at No. 4 6-2, 6-3 to No. 19 Carolina Prats-Milan.
The match concluded at No. 5, as Diana Stomlega outlasted freshman
Taylor Vinge 6-0, 6-2 to seal the match for the Pirates.
Valdosta State will look forward to Sunday afternoon, when they have an opportunity to bounce back against conference rival West Alabama at 12:00 noon in Valdosta, Ga. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
