Florida Southern Edges Women's Tennis 5-3

PENSACOLA, Fla. The Valdosta State women's tennis team's winning streak was snapped on Sunday in Pensacola, Fla., as the Lady Blazers suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of regional opponent Florida Southern.

Valdosta State slipped to 8-7 overall after the loss, while Florida Southern bumped their record to 5-11.

The Mocs started the day off with a narrow 9-7 win for Magda Riutort and Olivia Spagnuolo over VSU's duo of Jennifer Rink and Anke Poncelet at No. 1 doubles, before Bea Morales Hernandez and Joanna Lario fell 8-5 at No. 2 to Miroslava Mensikova and Katie Taylor-Doran.

VSU was forced to enter singles action with a 4-0 deficit after forfeits at both No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, but Morales Hernandez broke momentum at No. 1 singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Riutort. Poncelet picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 against Taylor-Doran, and Taylor Vinge secured a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Katie Stanford, but Lario fell to Mensikova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, which gave FSC the point they needed to claim the match.

Rink held a 6-4, 2-3 advantage at No. 2, but the set ended prematurely after the Mocs picked up their fifth point of the match.

The Lady Blazers return to action on Thursday, April 2 with another match in Pensacola, Fla. against Hawaii Pacific at 9:30 a.m.
