Women's Tennis Halts Chargers With 6-3 Victory

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Despite losing three points by way of forfeit, the Lady Blazer tennis team overcame the adversity to pick up a 6-3 Gulf South Conference win over UAH on Saturday in Huntsville, Ala.

Jennifer Rink joined Anke Poncelet to give the Lady Blazers a critical point at No. 1 doubles after the duo defeated Marleen Gort and Aniek Remmerswaal 8-4. Valdosta State then took a 2-1 lead after Bea Morales Hernandez teamed up with Joanna Lario for an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Singles action was more of the same for VSU, as the Lady Blazers saw Morales Hernandez and Rink pick up convincing 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 over Gort and Cristina Cabanas.

Lario put up a gutsy effort at No. 3 with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (9) win against Marta Briega to score VSU their fifth point of the day, and Poncelet secured the win for the Lady Blazers with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Naomi Esteve at No. 4.

The win lifted Valdosta State to 5-6 on the year overall and bumped their conference record to 3-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Chargers suffered their first GSC loss of the season, as they fell to 3-1 in GSC play and saw their overall record fall to 5-4.
