VSU Women's Tennis Edges Out No. 9 Rollins, 5-4

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lady Blazers of Valdosta State women's tennis put up a gutsy effort on Saturday afternoon to knock off the No. 9 Rollins Tars with a 5-4 victory in NCAA Division II South Regional women's tennis action in Valdosta, Ga.

Jennifer Rink and Anke Poncelet blasted Shannon Etten and Johanna Olsson at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 win, followed by Bea Morales Hernandez and Joanna Lario, who picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Taylor Brown and Carli Davis.

The No. 3 matchup went to the Tars, as VSU was forced to forfeit due to injury.

In singles action, Morales Hernandez scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Etten, and Rink followed up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Davis. Lario fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 to Olsson, but Poncelet helped VSU bounce back with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Brown.

The Lady Blazers gave up the final two singles matches after Taylor Vinge was defeated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and VSU was forced to forfeit at No. 6 due to a limited roster. But the earlier victories on the day were enough to secure the big victory for Head Coach John Hansen's squad.

VSU improved to 4-2 overall with the win, while Rollins fell to 1-2 after the defeat.

The Lady Blazers return to action on Friday at 2:00 p.m. to host Barry at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
