BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team traveled to Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday and fell 8-1 to the No. 5 Lynn Fighting Knights in an NCAA Division II South Region matchup at Perper Tennis Complex.
The No. 16 Lady Blazers (2-2, 2-0 GSC) opened the day with another doubles win for
Jennifer Rink and
Anke Poncelet at No. 1 doubles, as the duo cruised to an 8-3 win over Rosalie Willig and Grace Mpassy. The victory for VSU's junior/freshman pairing improved their record to 3-1 at No. 1 doubles on the year.
Unfortunately for VSU, Lynn (4-0) took control of the match from that point forward. Lynn's Vale Confalonieri and Carolina Cuevas team overtook Bea Morales and
Joanna Lario 8-5 at No. 2, and the Lady Blazers were again forced to forfeit at No. 3 due to a shortened, injury-plagued roster.
Lynn swept singles play on the day, which started with Morales' first loss of the season at No. 1, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Confalonieri. Willig held momentum for the Fighting Knights with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win over Rink at No. 2, and Mpassy added a 6-4, 6-2 win for Lynn at No. 3 over Lario.
The match concluded with a 6-3, 6-1 loss for Poncelet to Martina Gledacheva at No. 4, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win for Cuevas at No. 5 over VSU freshman
Taylor Vinge.
The Lady Blazers were unable to compete at No. 6, and forfeited the final point of the day to the Fighting Knights. Lynn's Alina Jane was credited with the victory to close out the afternoon.
The Lady Blazers return to action on Sunday in Melbourne, Fla. against the Florida Tech Panthers at 10:30 a.m. Check back on Sunday right here at
