VALDOSTA, Ga. – Riding high off an electrifying triple overtime Gulf South Conference win over the North Alabama Lions on Thursday night, the Blazers of Valdosta State men's basketball will now turn the page to Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup against Alabama-Huntsville.
Lennie Acuff brings his No. 19 ranked Chargers to town sporting a 4-2 record and a 1-0 mark in GSC play after their 74-65 win over West Florida on Thursday night in Pensacola, Fla. The Blazers, meanwhile, are off to a 5-1 start and opened up their conference record at 1-0 after Thursday night's victory over UNA.
The Chargers are led on offense by junior Seab Webster, who ranks 12
th in the league in points per game with an average of 15.5. Webster's support system on the attack includes Brandon Roberts and Greg Gardner, who are both averaging double-digit figures in the scoring column with 12.7 and 12.2 points averaged per game, respectively.
Saturday night's win featured an offensive onslaught for Valdosta State in which five different Blazers scored 20 points or more. Sophomore
Shaun Jones led the way with a career game that included 30 points scored and 10 rebounds. In addition,
Blake Justice remained among the Gulf South Conference's top 10 scorers after scoring 24 points in the contest to improve his average points per contest to 16.8.
In the rebounding column, junior
Justin Simon has been an absolute force for Valdosta State. His current average of 10.8 rebounds per game ranks second in the GSC and 17
th in all of Division II. Simon has delivered solid contributions on offense as well, resulting in double-double performances in half of VSU's six games and an average of 11.0 points per game.
The overall history of the two programs gives the Blazers a 26-22 all-time advantage, and VSU claimed victory in their last matchup with a narrow 67-66 win over the Chargers on January 22
nd at The Complex.
