Pensacola, Fla - Valdosta State split its Gulf South Conference road-opening doubleheader against No. 14 West Florida on Friday at the UWF Softball Complex, earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory in game one before falling in heartbreaking fashion, 7-6, in a walk-off loss in game two.
Game 1: VSU 3, West Florida 2
Valdosta State (22-22, 14-14 GSC) opened the day with a strong pitching performance and timely hitting to edge the Argonauts, 3-2. After falling behind early, the Blazers responded in the second inning when

Cailyn Cooke reached base to set the table. Rachel Lee delivered the key hit of the inning, driving a double to right field that brought home both runners and tied the game at 2-2.
From there, the game settled into a pitcher's duel, with
Alyssa Vallad taking control in the circle. Vallad limited one of the conference's top offenses to just four hits across seven innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out three. Her ability to keep West Florida off balance proved to be the difference as the Blazers stayed within striking distance.
The decisive moment came in the sixth inning. After
Chloe Eichelberger reached base and was replaced by pinch runner
Jayme Prandine, the Blazers manufactured a run through pressure and execution.
Carly Bogart singled to move the runner, and moments later
Charlotte Phillips reached on an error that allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving Valdosta State a 3-2 advantage.
Valdosta State's defense and pitching held firm in the final inning as Vallad worked out of a late threat to secure the win. Offensively, the Blazers tallied six hits, with Lee leading the way with two RBIs, while Phillips and Cooke each added hits and runs scored.
Game 2: VSU 6, West Florida 7
In game two, Valdosta State jumped out to an explosive start but was unable to hold off a late surge from West Florida, falling 7-6 in a walk-off loss. The Blazers wasted no time taking control, erupting for five runs in the first inning.

Chloe Eichelberger ignited the rally with back-to-back hits, and the Blazers capitalized on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning.
Charlotte Phillips drove in a run with a walk,

Evie Pitts capped the inning with an RBI double, giving Valdosta State a commanding 5-0 lead.
Valdosta State added another run in the second inning when Phillips doubled to score McNearney, extending the lead to 6-1. However, West Florida gradually chipped away at the deficit, using consistent offensive pressure to close the gap. The Argonauts scored in the third inning and added two runs in the fifth to make it a one-run game, before pushing another run across in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Despite the early offensive surge, the Blazers were unable to add insurance runs down the stretch, leaving the door open for West Florida. In the bottom of the seventh, Jessie Baughan tied the game with a solo home run, and the Argonauts completed the comeback moments later on a walk-off RBI single from Miranda Harmon, sealing the 7-6 victory.
McNearney led the Blazers offensively in game two with two hits and two runs scored, while Lee drove in two runs and Pitts added an RBI double. Phillips also contributed with two RBIs across the game, continuing her strong day at the plate.
