Valdosta State was unable to carry its momentum into the series finale, falling 7-0 to No. 14 West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Softball Complex. The loss marked the end of a competitive Gulf South Conference road series for the Blazers, who were limited offensively against a strong Argonaut pitching performance.
West Florida wasted no time setting the tone, capitalizing on early opportunities in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff single and a pair of defensive miscues by Valdosta State, the Argonauts struck for three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Hannah Harper that gave the home team an early 3-0 advantage. The Argonauts added to their lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, extending the margin to 4-0.
The Blazers (22-24, 14-16 GSC) struggled to generate offense throughout the contest, managing just three hits against West Florida starter Haley Guffey.
Saylor McNearney,
Chloe Eichelberger, and
Charlotte Phillips each recorded a hit, but Valdosta State was unable to string together opportunities or push a run across the plate.
West Florida continued to build on its lead in the third inning, using a combination of timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to plate three more runs. Jessie Baughan delivered a run-scoring triple, Olivia Keith followed with an RBI single, and another run scored on a wild pitch, pushing the advantage to 7-0.
In the circle,
Alyssa Vallad took the loss after allowing four runs—two earned—over the first inning.
Toree Wofford and
Giselle Portanova combined to provide relief, with Portanova settling in over the final 3.2 innings and allowing just one run while limiting further damage. Despite the pitching staff's efforts to stabilize the game, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Haley Guffey was dominant for the Argonauts, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing only three hits and striking out two. Her efficiency and ability to induce weak contact kept the Blazers off balance throughout the afternoon.
Defensively, Valdosta State committed two errors that contributed to West Florida's early scoring, while the Argonauts finished with 10 hits compared to the Blazers' three. The inability to capitalize offensively, combined with early defensive miscues, ultimately defined the outcome of the series finale.
With the loss, Valdosta State concludes its final GSC road series of the regular season and will look to regroup as it prepares for the closing stretch with a home seriers verus Union May 1st - 2nd.
