Blazers Split Doubleheader with Lee

Cleveland, TN. - Valdosta State split its Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Lee on Saturday at Butler Field, taking the opener 4-2 before falling in heartbreaking fashion in game two, 4-3.

Game 1: VSU 4, Lee 2

Valdosta State used a late offensive surge and a strong outing in the circle to defeat Lee, 4-2, in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday at Butler Field.

The Blazers found themselves in an early hole as Lee plated runs in each of the first two innings. In the opening frame, the Flames capitalized on a leadoff walk and a stolen base, later scoring on an RBI double from Sadie Winsett. Lee added to its lead in the second inning when Madison Pinzon launched a solo home run to center field, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage.

Valdosta State threatened early but struggled to break through against Lee's pitching staff. The Blazers collected hits in the first and third innings, including a single from Chloe Eichelberger and a bunt single from Adrianna Portanova, but were unable to convert those opportunities into runs. Lee starter Sadie Winsett kept VSU off balance through the first three innings, limiting damage and preserving the lead.

The momentum shifted in the fourth inning when Valdosta State capitalized on a key defensive miscue. Carly Bogart singled to lead off the inning, and Caitlyn Cooke reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, allowing the Blazers to put two runners on base. After advancing a runner into scoring position, Rachael Lee delivered in a clutch moment, driving a double to right center that scored both Bogart and Cooke. The two-run hit tied the game at 2-2 and swung momentum firmly in favor of the Blazers.

From there, both teams settled into a defensive battle. Valdosta State pitcher Alyssa Vallad was dominant after the early innings, working efficiently through Lee's lineup and limiting scoring chances. According to the box score on page one, Vallad tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking three across seven innings. Her ability to induce weak contact and escape jams proved critical in keeping the game tied heading into the late innings.

The Blazers finally broke through in the seventh inning, again taking advantage of defensive miscues. Charlotte Phillips reached base on an error by the Lee third baseman, setting the stage for another key hit from Eichelberger. The designated player delivered with a double to right center, bringing Phillips home to give VSU its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2. Moments later, Madison VanAllen came off the bench as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single to score Eichelberger, extending the lead to 4-2 and providing valuable insurance runs.

In the bottom half of the inning, Vallad remained composed under pressure. Lee put two runners on base with two outs, but the Blazer defense held firm. Vallad induced a game-ending pop up to second base, sealing the 4-2 victory and completing the comeback effort.

Offensively, Valdosta State recorded seven hits, with Eichelberger leading the way with two hits and an RBI, while Rachael Lee drove in two runs with her pivotal fourth-inning double. VanAllen's pinch-hit RBI also proved to be a difference-maker late in the contest. Defensively, the Blazers played error-free softball, a key factor in the win, while Lee committed two costly errors that directly contributed to Valdosta State's scoring opportunities.

Game 2: VSU 3, Lee 4

Valdosta State came up just short in a tightly contested game two matchup against Lee, falling 4-3 in walk-off fashion Saturday afternoon at Butler Field.

The Blazers were locked in a scoreless battle through the first four innings despite early opportunities at the plate. Valdosta State threatened in the opening inning, loading the bases with back-to-back singles from Chloe Eichelberger, Madison VanAllen, and Carly Bogart, but Lee's defense held firm to escape the jam. Both teams continued to trade scoreless frames as pitchers Savannah Barfield and Kaylee Underwood controlled the tempo, limiting offensive production and keeping the game deadlocked.

Valdosta State finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning with its biggest offensive inning of the game. Rachael Lee worked a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Charlotte Phillips followed with a single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Eichelberger delivered the decisive swing, blasting a three-run home run to left field to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead and shift momentum in their favor.

Lee responded in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue. Addison Emmerson tripled to right field and came around to score on a throwing error, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Despite the run, Barfield limited further damage and carried the Blazers into the sixth inning with the lead intact.

The Flames continued to apply pressure in the sixth inning, eventually evening the score. After a two-out single put a runner aboard, Alyson Jarvi delivered a clutch two-run home run to left field, tying the game at 3-3 and erasing Valdosta State's advantage.

Valdosta State was unable to respond in the top of the seventh, as Lee reliever Layne Bailey shut down the Blazers' offense over the final two innings, allowing just one hit. In the bottom of the seventh, Lee mounted one final rally. A leadoff single followed by another base hit put runners in scoring position, and after a strikeout, Sadie Winsett delivered the game-winning hit with a walk-off single to left field. The hit scored the winning run and sealed the 4-3 victory for the Flames.

Barfield turned in a solid performance in the circle despite the loss, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing four runs on 10 hits and striking out four. Offensively, Eichelberger led the Blazers with two hits and drove in all three runs with her fifth-inning home run. Bogart also contributed with a pair of hits, while Phillips added a hit and a stolen base as part of the fifth-inning rally.

The Blazers return home next weekend for a GSC series versus Christian Brothers with a doubleheader Saturday, April 18th with the first pitch being thrown at 12 pm E.T. and the series finale Sunday, April 19th at 1 pm E.T.
