Valdosta,Ga - Valdosta State split its Gulf South Conference opening doubleheader against Christian Brothers on Saturday at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park, falling just short in a wild comeback bid in game one before erupting offensively for an 8-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: VSU 8, CBU 9
In the opener, the Blazers (19-22) nearly pulled off a dramatic rally but ultimately came up just short in a 9-8 loss. The Buccaneers added another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, extending the margin to 9-0 before Valdosta State mounted its comeback.
Valdosta State struggled to generate offense through the first five innings, managing only a handful of hits against Emily Schooler. The Blazers finally broke through in the sixth inning when
Chloe Eichelberger launched a solo home run to get VSU on the board. Later in the frame, Rachel Lee delivered a two-run double, trimming the deficit to 9-3.
The momentum carried into the seventh inning as the Blazers put together a furious rally.
Saylor McNearney and Eichelberger opened the inning with hits before
Evie Pitts drove in a run with a double.
Carly Bogart followed with a two-run single, and
Annalise Buncy delivered a clutch two-RBI single to bring Valdosta State all the way back to cut the lead to 9-8. Despite the five-run inning and 11-hit effort, the Blazers were unable to complete the comeback, falling just one run short. McNearney led the offense with two hits, while Lee finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Eichelberger added a pair of hits and a home run.
Game 2: VSU 8 , CBU 4
Valdosta State responded emphatically, using a big third inning to power an 8-4 victory. The Blazers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Rachel Lee delivered a two-RBI double, scoring McNearney and
Chloe Eichelberger. After Christian Brothers answered with runs in the second and third innings to tie the game, Valdosta State exploded offensively in the bottom of the third.
Madison VanAllen sparked the inning with a two-run home run to give VSU the lead, and moments later
Cailyn Cooke delivered the decisive blow with a three-run homer to cap a five-run frame and push the Blazers ahead 8-3. Cooke finished with two home runs and four RBIs, while VanAllen added a home run and two RBIs in a strong all-around performance.
Christian Brothers continued to put pressure on the Blazers, collecting 12 hits in the contest and adding a run in the fifth inning, but Valdosta State's pitching staff settled in late. After
Alyssa Vallad allowed three runs in the early innings, VanAllen provided key relief to earn the win, and
Giselle Portanova closed the game with 2.2 scoreless innings to secure the victory.
Offensively, Valdosta State capitalized on its opportunities despite being outhit, scoring eight runs on seven hits while drawing six walks. Along with Cooke and VanAllen, Lee contributed two RBIs, and McNearney added a hit and a stolen base at the top of the lineup.
Overall, the Blazers showcased both resilience and offensive firepower across the doubleheader, combining for 16 runs and 18 hits on the day. After narrowly missing a comeback in game one, Valdosta State responded with a complete team effort in game two to earn the split and set the stage for Sunday's series finale.
