Valdosta, Ga - Valdosta State closed out its Gulf South Conference series against Christian Brothers with a strong all-around performance, defeating the Buccaneers 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
The Blazers (21-22) set the tone early and never relinquished control, combining timely hitting with a dominant outing in the circle from
Alyssa Vallad. According to the box score on page one, Vallad tossed a complete game, allowing just six hits and two unearned runs while walking three and striking out two across seven innings to earn her second win of the season.
Valdosta State wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning.
Saylor McNearney led off with a single and advanced into scoring position before Vallad helped her own cause with an RBI single to center field, giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneers answered in the second inning, capitalizing on a Valdosta State error and a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the second inning when the Blazers broke the game open.
Carly Bogart reached base to start the rally, and after a bunt and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases,
Chloe Eichelberger delivered the biggest swing of the day. The designated player launched a grand slam to left center, driving in four runs and giving Valdosta State a commanding 5-1 advantage.
From there, Vallad and the Blazer defense took control. Christian Brothers threatened in the middle innings but was unable to string together enough offense against Vallad, who induced key outs and limited damage. The Buccaneers managed just one additional run in the sixth inning, which came unearned following a defensive miscue.
Valdosta State added an insurance run in the fifth inning. After
Charlotte Phillips reached on an error and advanced into scoring position,
Cailyn Cooke delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 6-1. The Blazers finished with six runs on six hits, capitalizing on seven walks and taking advantage of Christian Brothers' defensive miscues.
Offensively, Eichelberger led the way with her grand slam and four RBIs, while Vallad contributed two hits and an RBI at the plate to go along with her complete-game effort. McNearney added a hit, a run scored, and reached base multiple times, while Cooke chipped in with an RBI double.
Defensively, Valdosta State held Christian Brothers to two runs despite six hits, and the pitching staff's ability to limit big innings proved to be the difference. The Buccaneers stranded nine runners on base, as highlighted in the box score, and were unable to overcome the Blazers' early surge.
With the victory, Valdosta State secured the series win and carried momentum forward after splitting Saturday's doubleheader. The Blazers' combination of timely hitting, strong pitching, and improved execution proved to be the key in closing out the weekend on a high note.
