VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Friday evening to visiting Spring Hill College.
Spring Hill broke open a 0-0 score in the 48
th minute with its first shot of the contest and the first goal of the season by Felicia Ajayi. VSU held a 13-5 lead in shots and a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net, despite having some good looks throughout.
The Blazers finished with seven shots in the first half as junior
Kayleigh Kearns had the first good look 19:11 into the contest, but SHC goalkeeper Carlotta Stark was there for the save. Just before half, Blazer junior
Taylor Youmans had a great chance, but Stark was there, once again, preserving the 0-0 tie at intermission.
Following the goal by SHC, the Blazers kept attacking as sophomore
Maria Rojas had one saved by Stark in the 70
th minute, while senior Katheine Kimmel had a good look late in the contest, while Rojas had two more good chances in the 85
th and 86
th minutes, respectively.
Rojas finished with three shots and two on frame, while sophomore
Jenni McIntosh had three shots and Youmans had two shots and one on target. Blazer senior goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake had the one goal allowed and two saves. Stark finished with five saves for SHC, while Ajayi came off the bench for the goal with three different Badgers each having one shot on target.
The Blazers fell to 1-6-4 overall and 0-5-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while SHC improved to 3-2-6 overall and 1-2-3 in league play. VSU turns its sights to No. 6 West Florida for a Sunday match at 1 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex for its annual Pink Match.
