MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team upset No. 22 Georgia College Wednesday afternoon, 5-2, to improve to 2-2 on the year, while Georgia College fell to 3-4 on the year. Stats of the match will be available later this evening.
VSU was dominant from the get go as the red and black won all three doubles matches in a total of 29 minutes for the early 1-0 lead. At the top spot, freshmen duo of
Denisa Hanakova and
Viktoriia Fedorova won 6-2 over Jada Young and Ashton Morrison to set the tone. At the No. 2 position, freshmen
Natalie Rainke and
Aneta Poborilova won 6-3, while juniors
Kayla Greco and
Olivia Pezo dispatched Shradha Chhabara and Lucy Kim, 6-2.
With the early momentum, the Blazers carried it into singles as Greco made quick work of Chhabara at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4, for a 2-0 lead. Moments later, Hanakova downed Morrison at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1 for a 3-0 lead. Fedorova won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 over Kim to clinch the match, while Rainke won 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at the top spot over Young for a 5-0 lead. GC's Ashley Bentz won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles over Pezo for a 5-1 score, while Poborilova and Chiara Santoro split the first two sets with Poborilova winning 7-6 (7-5) in the opening set and Santoro leveling the match with a 6-2 victory. In the ten-point tiebreak, Santoro won 10-7 for the 5-2 team score.
VSU snapped a two-match skid versus GC and took a 7-6 lead in the series since Feb. 8, 2009. The Blazers return home to prepare for a matchup with Columbus State at 2 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the VSU Tennis Complex.
