VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 8 Columbus State on Thursday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex.
The Blazers fell to 2-3 on the year, while CSU improved to 4-3. Freshmen duo of
Aneta Poborilova and
Natalie Rainke won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to get things started for the red and black. Juniors Oliva Pezo and
Kayla Greco lost 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Freshmen duo of
Viktoriia Fedorova and
Denisa Hanakova held a 5-4 lead over No. 5-ranked CSU tandem of Mariana Ramirez and Nikoline Gullacksen, but were unable to hang on, falling 7-5 as CSU won the doubles point.
In singles, CSU won at Nos. 4 and 6 for a 3-0 lead, but Greco won at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Agostina Bigotti for a 3-1 deficit. Hanakova won at No. 3 singles, while Rainke put up a great match against No. 27 Ramirez, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3-7). No. 35 Gullacksen won 6-2, 6-2, over Poborilova at No. 2.
The Blazers return to action Mar. 6, at No. 6 Flagler at 2 p.m., and then back home on Mar. 9 against Lee at 10 a.m., followed by Division I Connecticut at 10 a.m. on Mar. 11.
