VALDOSTA, Ga. – After all Blazer teams hit the road this past weekend, Valdosta State volleyball will make a quick stop back in Valdosta to play in the Red Clay Rivalry versus West Georgia on Tuesday before hitting the road again. Men's and women's basketball will host their annual Blazer Madness at The Complex on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, soccer starts postseason play on Saturday at Mississippi College and football is looking to build off their big road win this past weekend in Pensacola.
Football:
The Blazer football team won their biggest game of the year on Saturday, beating No. 18 West Florida at Pen Air Field. This was a game that was won was grit and heart. The Argonauts outgained the Blazers 444 to 272 and the Blazers went 0-10 on third down. A few key defensive stops and special teams doing their job willed the Blazers to a late victory on Saturday night, 31-28 Blazers. This week, the Blazers head to Livingston, Alabama to take on West Alabama on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. VSU is looking to extend their win streak to four and move to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the GSC.
Basketball:
The men's and women's basketball season kicks off on Thursday, November 2 as they host Blazer Madness at the Complex at 7 p.m. This event will be free admission for all, including free food vouchers from Chicken Salad Chick for the first 50 students. Blazer Madness will have a dunk contest, three point contest, a trick shot contest, and a performance from the eight-time national champion VSU Red Hots and five-time national champion Valdosta State Cheer Team. The crowd will have the opportunity to compete also, as students will compete in musical chairs and a shooting contest. At the end of the event, there will be a drawing for a $100 gift card courtesy of Georgia Lottery.
Soccer:
The Blazer soccer team traveled to Carrollton, Georgia to face off against rival West Georgia on Friday night. The game ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to an equalizing goal from junior
Jocelyn Oballe in the 73
rd minute. Thankfully, it was enough for the Blazers to secure a spot in the GSC Tournament this weekend. They finished the regular season in sixth place with an 8-5-4 overall record, with a 6-5-2 GSC record. West Florida secured the one seed, as they were followed by Lee, Mississippi College, Montevallo, and Union to round out the top five. The Blazers will head to Clinton, Mississippi to take on the Choctaws on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET. If they win, they will move on in the GSC tournament. If they lose, their 2023 season will be over.
Volleyball:
VSU hosts West Georgia in the Red Clay rivalry, as they look to put a scare into the Wolves on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at The Complex. This will be a 'Spooky Game' as we encourage all fans to dress up in your best Halloween costume, as the Blazers look to sweep UWG for the first time since 2016. This past weekend, VSU fell on the road to West Florida 3-1. VSU is currently 15-11 overall and 7-4 in GSC play and sit in fifth in the conference.
Cross Country:
Valdosta State men's and women's cross country head to Montevallo, Alabama to compete in the NCAA DII South Region race. The women be start at approximately 9 a.m. ET and will be running in a 6K. The men will start shortly after around 10:15 a.m. ET and will be running in a 10K. The Blazers ran at Montevallo on September 15
th, where the men's team finished sixth in the 8K, and the women finished in fourth for the 5K.
Tennis:
Both men's and women's tennis will be competing in the GSC Fall Championships in Montgomery, Ala. on November 3. Updates will follow as the information comes out.
