Wilson and Callenberger named Steel’s Jewelry Athletes of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga.- Blazer football junior G'Mone Wilson and VSU volleyball sophomore Katie Callenberger were named Steel's Jewelry Athletes of the Week. This is the first Steel's Jewelry Athlete of the Week award for both Wilson and Callenberger this season.
 
Wilson had 14 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown in the Blazers' 21-10 win at Mississippi College Saturday.  He also had two catches for 31 yards.  Wilson recorded his first 100-yard game on the ground at VSU on Saturday and had a long rush of 37 yards on the opening possession of the game.  Wilson broke of the big chunk yardage on a 4th and 1 from the MC 41.  Wilson then scored on the next play from four yards out for the early 7-0 lead as VSU scored on its sixth-straight opening drive in seven games this season. Wilson was also named Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his memorable performance.
 
Callenberger had a great week for VSU, starting in two matches for eight total sets. Defensively, she tallied six total blocks with one solo rejection and two digs. The Merritt Island, Florida native tallied five total blocks in the 3-2 victory over Mississippi College on Oct. 13 before recording a solo rejection in the 3-0 win over West Alabama on Oct. 14. She also had an impressive 12 kills with only one attack error to hit .423 over the weekend stretch.
 
Wilson and the Blazer football team (6-1, 3-1 GSC) return home to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium for homecoming week to host Shorter on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, Callenberger and the Blazer volleyball team (15-6, 7-2 GSC) hit the road to face off in the GSC/SSC Regional Crossover this weekend. The Blazers will first take on Eckerd College on Oct. 20 at 4:45 p.m. before facing Rollins and Lynn University on Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
