VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team put up a strong fight and had the early lead winning the doubles point, but No. 13 Columbus State won all six singles matches for a 6-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex.
In front of a great crowd on a beautiful afternoon, the Blazers came out looking for the upset as freshman
Rachelle Starreveld and junior
Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir made quick work of Valentina Abrile and S. Ramirez Goncalves, 6-1. CSU tandem of Amanda Citre and Luise Sches won at No. 3 doubles over freshman
Julia Saving and junior
Birte Langenstein, 6-4.
At the top spot, senior Estee' Widdershoven and sophomore
Eva Rivoal held a 5-4 lead as CSU duo of Beatriz Lopez and Candice Paya tied the set at 5-5. The VSU duo wouldn't be denied, however, as they won two-straight games for the 7-5 victory to clinch the team point.
VSU (4-5) didn't win a set in any of the six singles matches against Columbus State (8-3), but Brynjarsdottir pushed Agostina Bigotti in both sets at No. 6. Bigotti won 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Both Widdershoven and Starreveld battled back after tough opening sets, as Lopez won the second set in a tiebreaker over Widdershoven and Sachs won 7-5 over Starreveld.
The Blazers host No. 6 West Florida Friday at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
