VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team fell to 0-2 on the year with a 7-0 loss to No. 10 Flagler Sunday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts.
Flagler won all three doubles matches to claim the 1-0 lead in team scoring, however, VSU duo of senior Estee Widdershoven and freshman
Rachelle Starreveld gave Flagler's Eden Schlagenhauf and Luisa Hrda everything they could handle, as the VSU tandem fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3).
Schlagenhauf won by retirement over Widdershoven at the top spot for a 2-0 lead, while Anika Nissen downed freshman
Julia Saving 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 for a 3-0 lead and the Saints clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Flo. Massardo Brain at No. 6 over junior
Amelia Cornwell, who was playing in her first match of the season.
At No. 3, Alesandra Traub won 6-1, 6-0 over sophomore
Birte Langenstein, while Amelie Vogssgaetter won at No. 5, 4-6, 6-1 and 10-7 in the super tiebreaker as the match had already been clinched over junior
Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir. She was the lone Blazer to win a singles set in the match. Hrda won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) over Starreveld at No. 2 for the 7-0 victory.
The Blazers, who had their Gulf South Conference opener against Christian Brothers postponed on Friday, now will open GSC play at Auburn Montgomery on Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
