IN THE NATIONAL SEMIFINALS
This marks the sixth time VSU has qualified for the NCAA National Semifinals and the Blazers are 5-0 in the previous trips.  VSU last won in the semifinals in 2018, with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Notre Dame College (Ohio) 30-24.  Former Blazer David Brown had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second half which sparked the comeback for the Blazers.  This marks Colorado School of Mines' first trip to the National Semifinals in program history.  CSM is 5-6 all-time in the NCAA postseason in its seventh appearance.  The Orediggers are 1-3 in road games and reached the second round in 2004, 2016 and 2019, prior to this season.
Â
STRONG IN THE PLAYOFFS
VSU qualified for its 18th postseason appearance in program history in 2021, and tallied its third-straight top-seed in the region for the playoffs.  The Blazers are 28-13 all-time in the NCAA postseason and have won four national championships in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018.  VSU is 4-1 in the national championship game with the lone loss being to Grand Valley State in 2002.  The four national championship victories are tied with Grand Valley State for the third-most in NCAA Division II history and are tied for second among active Division II programs (Northwest Missouri State, 6). VSU's 28 victories are good for fifth-most all-time in NCAA Division II and third-most among active institutions, while the 18 appearances are good for a tie for fifth all-time and tied for fourth among active schools.Â
Â
GOING FOR 12
With a victory on Saturday, VSU would win its 12th game of the season and seventh time in program history with 12 or more victories in a season.  VSU won a school-record 14 games in 2002 and 2018, going 1-1 in the national championship in those two years.  VSU went undefeated at 14-0 with the national title in 2018.  The Blazers won 13 games in 2004 and 2007, while winning 12 in 2001 and 2012) and 11 in 1994.Â

Â
ABOUT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES
The Orediggers have gone where no team before them has gone before, qualifying for the quarterfinals last weekend for the first time and for the semifinals this weekend.  The 12-1 record for CSM marks the third 12-win season in program history and second-straight season (2004, 2019, 2021).  For the fourth time at CSM, the Orediggers have a Harlon Hill Finalist as running back Michael Zeman earned the prestigious finalist accolades.  Zeman has been outstanding all season long as he has 1,503 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground as he became Mines' seventh-straight season of a running back going over 1,000 yards on the ground.  This is Zeman's second season of eclipsing 1,000 yards.  He has tied the school-record for overall touchdowns in a season with 26, while he is two shy of tying the school-record for rushing touchdowns in a season.  Not only does Mines have Zeman, but also an outstanding quarterback in John Matocha and a strong receiving corps.  As a team, the Orediggers lead the nation in sacks at 4.00 per game, while they also lead the nation in completion percentage at a .699 clip. Matocha is second nationally at a .697 clip throwing the football. The Orediggers are top ten nationally in fewest penalties per game (7th, 4.23), first down offense (9th, 293), passes interecepted (5th, 18), punt returns (8th, 16.00), scoring defense (6th, 13.2 ppg), team passing efficiency (4th, 171.19) and in turnover margin (4th, 1.46) and turnovers gained (fifth, 31).  Zeman leads the nation in points scored (156) and total touchdowns (26).Â

Lio'undre Gallimore each eclipsed 1,000 yards for the Blazers last Saturday.  Saunds is ninth nationally in receiving yards with 1,136, while Gallimore has 1,013 yards receiving.  VSU is one of four schools (Mary, Bemidji State and Oklahoma Baptist) to have two 1,000-yard receivers this season.
Â
NATIONALLY SPEAKING

Â
FOR STREAKS
Despite the loss at UWF on Nov. 13, the Blazers have had quite a winning streak over the last three years.  Since the final five games of 2017, VSU has gone 39-3 overall and won a GSC-record 25-straight games from the final game of 2017, through the 2019 regular season.  VSU won 23-straight GSC regular season games from the final game of 2017 through to Nov. 13, 2021. Â

Seth McGill has had an outstanding season for the Blazers and outstanding career as he has rushed for 1,147 yards this season with 14 rushing touchdowns for a 95.6 average per game.  He has played in 37 games with 11 starts for his career.  McGill is fifth nationally and second in the GSC in rush yards per carry (6.95), while McGill leads the league in rushing touchdowns (14) for 16th nationally and he is tops in the GSC in rushing yards (1,147) for 20th nationally.  His 95.6 rushing average per game is good for 22nd nationally and best in the league.  McGill moved into a tie for seventh all-time in rushing touchdowns in a season against West Florida (Nov. 13).  Former Blazer Cedric O'Neal had 17 rushing scores in 2017 for the school-record in a season.  McGill's 37 career rushing touchdowns places him second all-time in school history as he surpassed Dominique Ross (1992-94) with a rushing score against Bowie State last weekend.  O'Neal leads the school-record book with 49 career rushing scores.  McGill's 234 career points on 39 touchdowns (including two receiving scores) puts him sixth all-time in school history.  McGill's 2,545 rushing yards places him eighth in school-history in career rushing yards.  From a season-record perspective, McGill's 14 rushing scores are tied for third all-time in a season, while his 1,147 yards on the ground are good for seventh all-time in a season.
Â
THOMPKINS MOVES UP
Junior
Jamar Thompkins is part of the Blazers' outstanding rushing attack as he, like McGill, has had an outstanding career.  Thompkins has played in 37 games with 24 starts, while recording 389 carries for 3,157 yards and 29 rushing touchdowns.  He has 31 total touchdowns for 186 points for his career.  Thompkins' 3,154 yards on the ground is good for fourth all-time in school history as he is just 83 yards from third all-time held by Ross with 3,237 career rushing yards.  Thompkins' 29 rushing touchdowns are good for fifth all-time in school history behind Aaron Jenkins (2000-03) with 34.  Both Thompkins and McGill have had outstanding three years at VSU thus far and both have their senior years in 2022 as they look to continue to rewrite the record book.
Â

VSU is 34th nationally in turnover margin at 0.50, for tops in the GSC.   The Blazers have just 11 turnovers on the year for 14th nationally and second in the league, while they have forced 17 for third-most in the GSC.  VSU holds a 62-27 lead on the opposition in points off turnovers.  VSU has not scored off an opponents' miscue, however, since the Oct. 30 meeting with West Georgia in Valdosta - a span of over four games.
Â
